On Friday, December 12, when the city center of Gouda lights up with thousands of candles during Gouda by Candlelight, Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij will bring music and light art to various locations throughout the city.
Starting in the late afternoon, various music groups from De Kunstmachine will perform at characteristic locations. In addition to music in the city center , this year the Cultuurhuis will present the light art project 'LICHTLICHAAM' on Erasmusplein .
Music groups in the city center
The Vrijetijdsorkest van De Kunstmachine will play folk music and Christmas carols in the Joostkapel. On the Weeshuispleintje, the two choirs Voce Cantate and Streetlife will perform a varied combination of Christmas and pop music. The Klarinetensemble Chalumeau will play in the Oude Synagoge. The evening will end musically with a performance by the Baroque Ensemble in the Old Catholic Church.

Leisure Orchestra | 4:00 p.m. – 4:45 p.m. | Joostkapel
This always cheerful orchestra, conducted by Maaike Gerlsma, plays folk music, light classical music, and Christmas music. Especially for Gouda bij Kaarslicht, the orchestra will be joined by singers who will perform well-known Christmas and pop songs.
Voce Cantate and Pop Choir Streetlife | 4:30–5:30 p.m. | Weeshuispleintje
Two Kunstmachine choirs in concert. Conducted by Paul-Chris van Strien, they will perform the best of their (Christmas) repertoire.
Clarinet ensemble Chalumeau | 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. | Old Synagogue
The 12 clarinetists, conducted by Dominique Zwartelé, will perform a solemn program with works by the composers Palestrina, Mozart, Bach, and Handel.
Baroque ensemble | 7:15 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. | Old Catholic Church
Conducted by Hans Wolff, you will hear the recorder, flute, violin, and harpsichord. Dream away to the beautiful music of Telemann, Handel, and Vivaldi.
LICHTLICHAAM (Light Body) on Erasmusplein
The light art installation LICHTLICHAAM can be seen between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. right next to Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij. The artwork was developed with, by, and for young people and focuses on the often invisible struggles of young people with mental health issues. The artwork depicts how young people view themselves and their bodies, how they deal with eating disorders, and invites conversation in an accessible way. Led by Jeugdtheaterhuis, young people from all over Gouda will perform several short performances on this theme at the artwork that evening. The kick-off of LICHTLICHAAM will take place at 6 p.m., and everyone is welcome to attend.
LICHTLICHAAM is a project by Cultuurhuis Garenspinnerij – De Kunstmachine, Jeugdtheaterhuis, StudioGonz, and Stichting KernKracht.
