The Gouda clay pipe is a ceramic tobacco pipe that was smoked by many men in the18th century. In 1606, English mercenaries came to the Netherlands to reinforce Gouda. They taught the people of Gouda how to make clay pipes. Some time later, in 1660, the guild for Gouda pipe makers was founded.
With the advent of wooden pipes, cigars, and the popularity of cigarettes, the craft has almost died out. You can admire Gouda clay pipes in the Treasure Room of Museum Gouda.
