Due to renovations, the city hall will be closed from summer 2025 to summer 2027.
You can find more information about the plans for this historic building on the municipality's website.
In the summer of 1438, a major fire severely damaged the town hall. The city council decided that the new town hall should be freestanding and chose the market square, then still a marshy peat bog, as its new location. On the right-hand side of the building, you can see the carillon with its mechanical figures, installed in 1961. The main character in the puppet show is Floris V, who granted Gouda city rights in 1272. Every two minutes past the half hour and on the hour, you are treated to a beautiful spectacle.
